It also breeds on Trinidad.
Birds in the north and south of the breeding range, including the populations in Central America, Trinidad, northern Venezuela and Colombia, and southern Argentina and Brazil, are migratory, moving into tropical South America in the northern winter.
This is a bird of lowland forest and savannah, which builds a stick nest in a tree and lays 1-2 blue-white eggs. It is typically 33-38cm long and weighs 190-280g. It is not particularly gregarious, although often seen in flocks on migration.
The Plumbeous Kite has long, pointed wings. Adults are mainly slate-grey, with a paler head and underparts. The short black tail has 2-3 white bands. The eyes are red and the legs are orange. In flight, this kite shows a rufous primary patch.
Sexes are similar, but immature birds have white-streaked grey upperparts and dark-streaked whitish underparts. They lack the rufous wing patch. The call of Plumbeous Kite is a whistled si-see-oo.
The flight is slow, with frequent glides, and the prey is almost exclusively insects taken in the air. This kite often perches conspicuously on dead branches, with its long wings projecting well beyond the tail.

It is also one of the four roaring cats. It differs from a lion's roar and is more of a series of hoarse coughs. It is often confused with the leopard but the Jaguar is a stockier animal. It is usually larger with a broad head and shorter legs and tail. The color is generally a tawny yellow with dark spots on the head and neck and dark rings on the body. Inside these rings there is usually a dark spot. This is the primary difference between the spots on a Jaguar and the spots on a leopard. There are also black Jaguars. These are usually found in dense forests and are often called Black Panthers. The body length is between 4 and 6 feet and its tail is about 30 inches.

They feed on small prey such as the capyabara and the peccarie but will also eat larger animals such as cattle. They will also eat reptiles such as the crocodile and small rodents. It has a very powerful jaw and usually kills its prey with one bite. Its name comes from the South American Indian word "yaguara." This means "a beast that kills its prey with one bound". Unlike most big cats, Jaguars don't kill by biting the neck. They bite through the temporal bones of the skull and kill quickly.

Jaguars are found in tropical rainforests, arid scrub, and wet grasslands. They prefer dense forests or swamps with a ready supply of water. Geographically they are found in the Southwestern United States throughout Central America and into Northern South America. Because of its power, jaguars have no real predators other than man. It also has no rivals for food and territory. Except during breeding season, Jaguars are solitary creatures. They primarily stay on land although they can swim quite well. They can communicate with various vocal sounds and use scent to mark their territory. They also cannot be classed as diurnal or nocturnal. Depending on the situation and the territory they inhabit, they will do either.

After a gestation period of about 100 days, a litter of 1-4 cubs is born. They nurse for 3-4 months and stay with the mother for about 2.

Introduction

photo: Artur Keuneck

We organize, equestres routes, fluvial expeditions, birdwhacting and walked expeditions. Following always the same direction, they had penetrated in the Valley of the Guaporé, where previously it is Manoel Bicudo, great preador of the parecis indians, that opened it way, therefore, its footprints had been followed by the new adventurers who “Had reached Plateaus of the Parecis”, already devastado by its predecessors, had put chest, beyond, to the forest with that they toparam, in the diaper Sudo-West, between the Jaúru and the Guaporé, had beached a ship it, in perforated of “seven léguas of thickness”, that it inspired the name to them of Mato Grosso, data the region, and had been to have waters of the Sararé and Galera, to the chapada one, where them the richness mimou, when reviewing to them wonderful gold nuggets. Taken the administrative measures, that if made necessary in cases such, for soon consisting the Arraial de Sant'Ana, after that, of San Francisco Xavier and Ours Lady of the Pillar, all in the same one chapada, that the Sararé skirtes in pressed semicircle. They were, thus, launched settling landmarks of the region where, times later, would be built the Beautiful Village of the Santíssima Trindade, that would be later, the headquarters of the Captainship of Mato Grosso and Cuiabá, a time that, San Francisco Xavier would give origin to that population, raised, some time later, in the called small farm of Glad Landing, determined the posterior disappearance of the locality established for Fernando Paes of Barros. The great activity of the mineradores in them you cultivate just-discoveries, despertou the attention of the Portuguese Government, in virtue of its situation of border with the domínios of the Castilians, who lived in constant shocks with the Portuguese, aiming at to the assenhoreamento of both the edges of the River Guaporé, and to hinder that the Castilians took ownership of that rich region, until then unknown. Its first concrete attitude was the assignment of a General Captain to govern the Captainship of Cuiabá, created for Regal license of 08-05-1748. The choice fell again into the person of D. Antonio Rollim de Moura Tavares, who the 17-01-1751, assumed the exercise in Cuiabá.Trazia Rollim de Moura, severe “Regal Instructions”, signed for the proper queen, in Lisbon, in 17-01-1749. “Presumption enters the districts in that if it composes that General Captainship is of Cuiabá what presently more is found town, however, taking care of the one that in the Mato Grosso if requires the biggest monitoring, because of the neighborhood that has, it had for good, to determine that the head of the Government if put the same in district of Mato Grosso, in which you will make your costumada residence”. The delay of Rollim in Cuiabá it was of little time. Exploring for the sertões, for the same track left for predecessors, it reached the edges of the River Guaporé, arriving at the Arraial of San Francisco Xavier, with the firm intention to fulfill what he was definitive in the Regal Instructions. Rollim Moura, opposing the desire of the components of its comitiva, did not want to use to advantage the nucleus already formed of San Francisco, preferring to launch the foundations of the new Village, to the right edge of the Guaporé in the place of Glad Landing, in 19 of March of 1752. With the presence of the governor, for the mineral wealth, the granted privileges, the town took development, attracting new inhabitants. In 1754, it was changed clientele of the Chapada for the chapel of Saint Antonio of the Village, sita in the place where, in the following year, if it established the matrix of the SS. Trindade. The 15 of April of 1752, were ordered to construct for Rollim de Moura, the first construction, “the Palace of the Governors”, it of the First Church of the Santíssima Trindade was followed.

photo: Hélio Caldas

Before exactly to arrive the Beautiful Village, Luiz of Albuquerque already had traced the initial plan of its Government. The first phase of the historical formation of the Pantaneiro Horse is on to the foundation of Buenos Aires, in Argentina, 1.541. Peter Mendoza brought horses and mares, that had after been abandoned the fire of the village and its despovoamento. Readjusting to live in plains, the flock if reproduced as much that in 1580, when of the second foundation of Buenos Aires, already had register of wild herds in plains of Argentina. They were called " chimarrões". A century later these herds they were calculated in thousand. Already they had fond of Paraguay and from there they had passed to Brazil, brought for the hand of the indians knights (GUAICURUS, which the KADIWÉU were the predominant ones) and for the Jesuit Priests, when they had come to establish the guaraníticas reductions (Seven peoples of the Missions, Brazil and Salto del Guairá, Paraguay). These herds if had expanded as much that some animals had arrived at Paraguay and, from there, for the Chaco, had passed to the Pantanal of the Mato Grosso. The second phase of the formation of the Pantaneiro Horse starts accurately in the point where the Bandeirantes taming the pantaneira region had left the untied horses for all. These animals had been themselves spreading for the immense Weed plains, flooded almost that in permanent time for the river Paraguay. In consequence of the distances and difficulties of communication between this extreme zone and the coast, the Pantaneiro Horse was total isolated of another equine species, crossing itself freely between itself, without any influence and infusion of others sangues. An ANIMAL OF MUCH COURAGE became. Traditional creators prefer to keep them half-savages so that they do not lose the rusticidade. According to cuiabano historian Cavalcante Proença, the first horses had come in 1.580, with Dom Alvar Nunes Cabeza de Vaca, a compound of conqueror and missionary, nominated governor of the River of the Silver for the Spanish Kingdom, with the mission to save Buenos Aires and to develop Installation, in Paraguay. Cabeza de Vaca lode of ship until Santa Catarina, with four hundred people and 26 horses. From there it followed for land for Installation, in a passage made that it to cross the Pantanal, until the height of the meeting of the river Cuiabá with Paraguay. In this passage it lost some horses, that if had become " baguá" (wild horse) In these times the horse was valid a richness. It has a public writing of 1551, in Installation, of the purchase of a horse for four a thousand weights of gold. Little more than one hundred years later, in the same Installation, its value did not pass of four weights. What it made so great difference was that the horse if acclimatized easily in this part of America and if multiplied fast, mainly as horse baguá, created in freedom. The horse, come of the Europe, haunted our indians. The majority of had it to the tribes as fera (it prevented and it) or the way as hunting (it ate and it). But a nation, of mbaiás-guaicurus, understood right the horse it saw and it as transport and as weapon. E these indians, who already were senhoriais and conquering, had used the horse to increase infinitely its capacity of fight and its radius of action. They had become, from now on, the “indians knights”. With its diverse ramifications - between which of the Kadiwéu, existing until today in the region of the Bodoquena, Mato Grosso of the South, the indians knights occupied a territory that went of Cuiabá the Installation. They fought the other tribes in such a way how much the white - Spanish, Portuguese - that they came in search of domain and slaves. If they were almost imbatíveis fighting the foot, mounted if they had become the dog. Félix de Azara, commander of the Spanish Borders of the Paraguay of 1781 the 1801, wrote that the salvation was that guaicurus if contented with one alone canine tooth in each attack, “of the opposite would not remain one alone Portuguese in Cuiabá”. In 1795, the flock of the indians knights already was calculated in 8.000 animals for the colonel Rodrigues of the Prado, commander of the Fort of Coimbra, in the verge with Bolivia. Almost all trained bellwethers and in the art of the war, the cavalry and the sport. In the War of Paraguay, in 1864, the indians knights, already then Brazilian for one treated to peace signed with the Crown in 1791, had fought to our side, in a Pantaneiro Regiment formed with horses of its proper creation. E if had become important military factor in the defense of Mato Grosso. The pureness of the race, in part, was only possible thanks to the indians guaicurus. Many of the practical ones of handling, still today sights in the Pantanal, come of guaicurus, the indians knights, who had arrived to more than understand illness of horses of what of the bothering of proper them - in saying of the Spanish Jesuit Sanchez Labrador. The indians knights had given themselves so well with the horse who had created a proper way to mount, as much in the sport as in the war. This finished immortalized for painter Jean Baptista Debret in the picture Attack of the cavalry guaicuru, today a classic of our historical iconography, It immortalized the image of guaicuru, gallopping on the back of the Pantaneiro Horse, to run away from the reach of the enemy aiming. By the way, these warlike indians had been considered, to its time, the most agile cavalry of the world. The Pantaneiro horse is an animal agile, resistant, intelligent, persistent, capable to support long walked and possesss a good temperament. It was multiplied, forming a suitable type to the bioclimáticas conditions, fruit of the natural election for more than four centuries, with little or no interference of the man. The Pantaneiro Horse consisted in a factor of economic and social importance, becoming essential in works of cattle and the transport of the floated ones, as much in the Pantanal as in the serrana region. Currently he is being very used in the Clubs of Bow, in tests of long bow, apartação, of team penning, in untied, tests of reins, the raids by horseback, enduros, and has been remained to the height of other races, in all the competitions. The main types of pelagem of the Pantaneiros are: tordilho (the majority), bay, chestnut, sorrel, rosilho and lobuno. All for are accepted, less the albinic (melado). In the end of century XIX, the race entered in decline mainly due the illnesses, as " plague of the chairs " e the equine infectious anemia. Therefore the Brazilian Association of the Creators of Cavalo Pantaneiro was established in 1972 (ABCCP), whose headquarters are in Poconé, TM., having for purpose to congregate the creators, to organize and to keep the Genealógico Register of the race, to foment the creation and to study all the referring subjects to the Pantaneiro Horse. In 1988 the EMBRAPA/CPAP implanted a nucleus of creation in the Nhecolândia, Corumbá MS., in the Farm Nhu Mirim. In 1.989 the Association of the Creators of the Pantaneiro Horse of the Mato Grosso of Sul was established (ACCP/MS), that it had a period of great movement, but that, unhappyly it had paralyzed its activities. In 2.003 its documentation was reconstituted and came back to have important paper in the creation and election of the Pantaneiro Horse, also participating of Expo-Great, MS. the Federal University of the Thick act of Sul (UFMS) also keeps a criatório, in the Farm School, in Terenos, MS. and, it has been of excellent aid in the election of the Pantaneiro. The MS. today, has a so good flock how much of TM., cradle of the race of this " small great cavalo". The Pantaneiro Horse had exactly that to be a very special animal. The conditions of survival and service in the pantaneiras farms demand a resistance animal, of estamina and intelligence that the historical conjuncture drew almost miraculously for this region. It is not trick to pass ace more than times six months day and night with the leg inside d' water. For the majority of the other horses this is enough to apodrecer the hoof and to give to fever, making a white and disforme jelly. It is not easy to almost half survive year with capim under of agua, needing to bank the amphibian not to die of hunger.

photo: ABCCP

The horse " it embeds" the head in the water and, folder. It is not little to work the entire day in the heath, with the four threaded legs in the adobe and the mud. For a horse with open hoof and back impulse, this would be the surrender and the disconnection. As a specialist in horses says, Dr. Peter Gouveia, has more than half national most expensive century forming and judging several of craques: " what in other horses it would be defect - the closed hoof and the body of swimming athlete, with the ample chest and inclined crupper small e -, into the Pantaneiro if transforms into insuperáveis virtues. This small, thrifty and resistant horse still goes to finish recognized as the animal of ideal service for the Brasil." A chain of the formation of the Pantaneiro Horse says that for return of 1.736, then the Governor of Paraguay, ordered emissaries to buy a herd of cows in Is Vicente, SP., of where they had come you celebrate them " cows of Gaete". In the passage of the fields of Vacaria (Shining River, MS.), of Maracajú, MS., going for the Pantanal, some horses had been embezzled, others had been stolen by the indians guaicurus e, later, had spread themselves for the pantanais of the Mato Grosso. Another chain says that the Pantaneiro descends of the horses of the Farm of the Corral, in the State of Goiás and, that he was of Emperor D. Peter II, which presenteou the Governor of the Mato Grosso (Don Luis Melo Albuquerque Pereira and Cáceres), with a lot of mares and a sire. This, beyond serving the mares of the Real Cavalry, started to be used for the farmers of the pantaneira region of Vila Bela of the Santíssima Trindade at the time Capital of the State of the Mato Grosso. By having going of the Farm of the Corral, per many years, they had been called " CURRALEIROS" . With the foundation of the ABCCP., it came the REGISTER in the Ministry of Agriculture, with the name of HORSE PANTANEIRO. What nobody argues more is if the Pantaneiro is a race or not. It is a perfectly settled race has three hundred years more than - it certifies in official document the Coordinating Commission of the National Horse, of the Ministry of Agriculture. A race fruit of the natural election, with little or no action of the man.
